  • Description: Making an effort Documentary produced by the Municipal Waste Collection Company of Bologna to show how much has been done (above all in terms of modernisation) and how much has yet to be done (above all in terms of raising public awareness). After a few views of the city (panoramic shots of the hills, Via Indipendenza, Piazza Maggiore, Piazza del Nettuno), we see a man hiddenly trying to dump a bidet in a bin that is too small for it. The voiceover invites the viewer to make “a little more effort” in helping to improve the waste collection service. On the other hand, another person correctly throws away some boxes in a new bin. A brief outline of the history of urban waste collection in Bologna, with the aid of vintage photographs, from the "ruscaroli" with their horse-drawn carts, who announced their arrival to citizens with their trumpets, to the founding of AMNU (1948) and its progressive modernisation (rubbish collectors on bicycles, trucks, galvanised bins). We return to the present day, the Northern Sector company offices from where rubbish collection trucks and rubbish collectors on bicycle leave. Images of waste collection, automatic compressors, a rubbish dump. Followed by: the construction site for the incineration plant in Via del Frullo; the competence of rubbish truck operators in narrow streets and busy areas of the city (the university area is recognisable); nocturnal cleaning with water pumps (Piazza Maggiore and Via Pescherie Vecchie are recognisable). The film concludes with an invitation to citizens to help by throwing their rubbish into the new bins.
